Study in Latvia

When choosing to study in Latvia, student can study in capital city Riga or at one of the cities that are as beautiful as Riga and are close to nature where student can enjoy not only study environment but also beautiful landscapes and friendly environment of the small cities. Admission

In order to study in Latvia students who are willing to apply for studies should be aware that before proceeding with the application process / signing the agreement/ applying for the residence permit the documents, the admission office of the chosen university will send your education documents for verification(recognition).

Tuition fees

Tuition fee depends on the chosen institution and the study program:

  • Medical Sciences = 7,000–15,000 EUR
  • Business Studies and Management Sciences = 2,000–6,000 EUR
  • Engineering and Technology = 2,200–4,000 EUR
  • Mathematics and Informatics = 2,000–4,000 EUR

Health insurance

Each student must be aware that it is mandatory upon arrival to obtain health insurance for the entire planned period of stay in the Republic of Latvia. A health insurance is required to be able to receive a Residence Permit.

For non EU citizens – life and health insurance policy which ensure at least the following health care services:

  • Emergency medical assistance costs;
  • Treatment costs of growing chronic illness;
  • Transport costs to the closest medical facility providing the Services mentioned above;
  • Transportation costs to return the patient to his/her home country in the case of a serious illness.

The minimum coverage limit indicated in the policy cannot be less than 42,700 EUR over the insurance period.


ACCOMMODATION

Some universities have their own student dormitories; others provide assistance with housing search. You should ask the international student advisor at your chosen university for advice and/or assistance, since the real estate market in Latvia is rather unsettled even for locals.


Average cost of living in riga (per month)

  • Accommodation:  Dormitories/Student Hostel: 70-120 EUR | Flat renting, not shared: 250-350 EUR | Flat renting, shared: 100-200 EUR
  • Food: 120-250 EUR (Meals at the city centre: 5-9 EUR per meal)
  • Transportation: Taxi (from the city centre to suburbs): 7-15 EUR (1 transfer) |Public transport tickets for students: 16 EUR per month (trams, trolleybuses, buses) |Public transport oneway ticket: 1.15 EUR
  • Leisure, personal needs: around 100 EUR depending on needs | Cinema ticket: 5-10 EUR | Opera ticket: 7-42 EUR | Rock concerts: 7.5-30 EUR

Average monthly living expenses in Latvia are estimated to be between 450 and 700 EUR, depending on the type of accommodation (student dorm or privately rented housing/flat). These amounts should be enough to cover food, accommodation, utilities, transportation and other expenses.


Average cost of living in Jelgava (per month)

  • Food: 130 EUR (Meals at the city centre: 3‐5 EUR per meal)

  • Food: 120‐230 EUR (Meals at the city center: 2.50–9 EUR per meal)
  • Transportation: Taxi (around the city): 3.50–6 EUR (1 transfer) | Public transport tickets for students: 16.50 EUR per month (for students who have been declared in Ventspils) or 26.40 EUR (without the 50% discount) | Public transport one‐way ticket: 0.60–0.90 EUR (depending on the hour of the day)
  • Leisure, personal needs: around 50‐70 EUR depending on needs | Cinema ticket: 3–5.70 EUR | Opera ticket: 4–20 EUR | Theater ticket: 4–7 EUR | Sports facilities – mostly free of charge for students

STUDENT VISA

If students from outside EU come for a longer period than 90 days, they must apply for a residence permit in a Latvian Embassy abroad. Please note that it may take up to several weeks to obtain a visa or a residence permit. Therefore application procedures should be started as early as possible.
